For those of us who think guns a sign of weakness and depravity, the argument guns make things safer and nobler soils both fact and spirit. That the NRA does not allow guns into its own convention is at once hilarious and revealing, a lie our enemies will not cop to, either in front of the microphone or, perhaps, in front of the mirror.
But there is also a model here for President Biden or Vice President Harris or Beto or whomever else wants to take it on.
Go to the reddest of the red states and seek out an audience of gun lovers and make the case. If Hitchens could go to the Bible Belt and debate the believers, the Dems can jump into the fire and say to the crowd, after they’ve gone through a metal detector, “sure, I hear you yelling at me, and yes, I can tell you hate me, but I am not killing you and you are not killing. Why? Because in this room, as much disagreement and anger as there may be, there are no guns. Liberals think that a step toward civilization, toward what the Constitution calls ‘the common defense.’”
