Today I sat in as a group of wealthy American students talked about American Western expansion and what this did to Native Americans. They knew few facts, could offer vague emotive thoughts more than precisely argue, and were determined someone other than them do something about injustice.
I also sat in as a group of African students watched ten minutes of Mark Zuckerberg explaining how META will work to develop virtual space. The video essentially expects investors to be delighted to take part in the sick dreams of one man. (It was the most upsetting ten minutes of my past few months.) Zuckerberg’s power and the kids “of course we will try it because it will be the new thing” default setting ensures that the history that slaughtered them in real space will be replaced by a technology that will ignore them in a common fantasy.
The Americans can’t see how damaged they are. The Africans are too busy extricating themselves from old battles to be prepared for the new ones.
I think maybe we need to start again with education.
